H.E. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim President Republic of Mauritius
HE Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, GCSK, CSK, PhD, DSc was sworn in in 2015 as the 6th President and the first female president of the Republic of Mauritius. She has been an independent director on the board of Barclays Bank Mauritius between 2012 and 2015 and is the Managing Director at the CIDP R & I and a professor of organic chemistry at the University of Mauritius. Prior to this, Her Excellency was an elected chairperson to the International Council for Scientific Union – Regional Office for Africa, between 2011 and 2014. She has been a member of the expert panel on ‘Infectious diseases’ of the special programme convened by the UNDP, UNICEF and WHO as well as a member and scientific adviser of numerous international research programmes and foundations including the European Union, Canada, Sweden, the Indian Ocean Commission and the World Bank.
As part of Her Excellency’s academic achievements, she is an elected fellow of the Linnaean Society of London, the Islamic Academy of Science in Jordan, the African Science Institute and the African Academy of Sciences. An author and co-editor of 28 books, Her Excellency has written scientific articles in biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. She has lectured extensively worldwide and is a member of the editorial boards of major journals and co-authored the first African Herbal Pharmacopoeia.
Her Excellency’s awards include the L’Oréal-UNESCO Prize for Women in Science and the special prize from the CTA/NEPAD/AGRA/RUFORUM as well as the African Union Commission Award for Women in Science.
